My beautiful Byron,

This Thursday letter find me in Southern California where we have just experienced an ‘Atmospheric River’ called The Pineapple Express.

Atmospheric rivers are relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere – like rivers in the sky – that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics. These columns of vapor move with the weather, carrying an enormous amount of water vapor. When the atmospheric rivers make landfall, they often release this water vapor in the form of rain or snow. So, yesterday I noticed the sea was rough as a movie about rough seas. Whitecaps and dark waters swelling in a very un-Californian manner. And then the wind started. At night it was super loud. Almost like a hurricane. And today it is gone. Back to loveliness. But now I know about atmospheric rivers. And the Pineapple Express. How lovely that every day brings some new lesson and makes us one tiny bit better informed than we were the day before.P1060355byrondad

Here’s what the Government weather web pages says about it.
A well-known example of a strong atmospheric river is called the “Pineapple Express” because moisture builds up in the tropical Pacific around Hawaii and can wallop the U.S. and Canada’s West Coasts with heavy rainfall and snow.

Prevailing winds cross over warm bands of tropical water vapor to form this “river,” which travels across the Pacific as part of the global conveyor belt. When it reaches the west coast, the Pineapple Express can dump as much as five inches of rain on California in one day.

Atmospheric rivers come in all shapes and sizes, but those that contain the largest amounts of water vapor and the strongest winds are responsible for extreme rainfall and subsequent flooding. These events can affect the entire west coast of North America, often disrupting travel and damaging property in the process.
