SAS Band. The Show.

Spike Edney’s SAS Band  recorded live at Shepherds Bush Empire, February 2000. Every track has its own story. Everyone involved is remarkable in some way. Almost all the songs were worldwide hits, performed live by the writers.
Producing this album was the most fun ever with many unforgettable moments.

I particularly enjoyed my invitation to breakfast with Richard O’ Brien, to play him the mix we did of Time Warp. He is both a fine breakfast chef and a gifted raconteur whose recollection of how the Rocky Horror show came to be had me as an edge-of -eat audience, and reminds me now of my mistake in not having a film crew to record it.

I enjoyed driving to Brighton to meet Arthur Brown and hear stories from his front row seat in British music, over a pint at his local in Brighton.  Spikes brass arrangements for ‘Fire‘ added an incendiary element to an already great song.

Mixing Radio Ga Ga at Rogers studio in the Surrey countryside gave my dog Wallace the opportunity to annoy his astonishingly Black swans in a chasing incident that ended with laughter rather than the less attractive alternative. I would definitely have Black swans if I had a lake in my garden.

Thinking about how many lovely people were involved in this project and how many stories interweave with all these highly accomplished musicians in Spikes musical circle means I could go on for hours.
It really was a fun time for me, and I think, for everyone involved. John Etchell’s did a great job capturing the sound on ‘tape.’

On the sadness side, Paul Young (Mike and the mechanics/Sad Cafe) died shortly after recording the quite fantastic version of ‘Every day hurts.’ that appears on this album.

Spike’s SAS Band go from strength to strength. If you have the opportunity to catch an SAS Band show – don’t miss it.
